Not A Winner, But On Top Of The World

josh hamilton.jpg          I got one question for Hamilton after tonight: How does it feel? I would imagine the answer to that question would be somewhere along the lines of what Tony The Tiger would say, “Grrrrrrreat.” In one night the former drug addict has become a hero in the Bronx. You knew the story of the Josh Hamilton coming into tonight, the story of a guy who struggled with drugs and alcohol, but got convinced by his grandmother to clean up and did just that. Now, not only is he an All-Star but he’s the thief of the spotlight. He had every fan in Yankee Stadium up on their feet, cheering for him. Unfortunately, he’s only human and didn’t have enough energy after his mammoth first round to beat Morneau, but he’s still the man and is the Home Run Derby King in my eyes. God, I love this sport.

P.S. I don’t know Justin Morneau [obviously] and he’s probably a great guy as well, but he’s just robbing everybody. First, he robbed Jeet of an MVP award two years back, which I personally felt the Capt’n should’ve won, and then takes the Home Run Derby trophy from Ham tonight. Tsk Tsk.

Home Run Derby ’08

With Yankee Stadium’s short porch in right there’s no doubt the lefties will have the upper hand tonight.
Who will win the Derby this year?

Updates To Come:

7:19: When asked about hitting one of out the ballpark [a feat never been done before in Yankee Stadium with a fair ball] Hamilton said “You guys know that little opening where the subway goes through… watch out.”

8:16: Mr. October threw out the first pitch to Jeter. Jeet’s pick for tonight: Josh Hamilton.

8:35: Sizemore hit a beautiful blassst to right that landed in the opening between the bleachers and box seats. Sweet swing.

8:51: Utley made a great late push but it may not be enough. Utley ends up with 5. Longoria: 3. Uggla: 6. Sizemore: 6.

9:05: Berkman jumps out in front with 8.

9:14: Morneau ties Berkman, but was looking mighty tired after all those drives.

9:21: Braun makes a late stab, pushing him into the second round. Ham up next.

9:52:28 home runs. Josh Hamilton [my pick] is a beast. He already has fans of any and every team loving him. Longest: 518 ft… ridiculous.

10:03: Right about now I don’t think anyone cares about the other batters. What they’re thinking: When is it Josh’s turn again?

10:27: Hamilton makes it look easy. If he doesn’t win it everyone will go nuts.

10:53: He didn’t win the trophy but he was the highlight of the night. *Bowing down to Josh Hamilton*

More Garbage

All I have to say about today’s game is thank God for the All-Star break. The offense for this team sucks right now, and they know it. Letting a guy on a 90 pitch count go into the 9th inning is unbelievable. If the Yankee hitters are still striking themselves out after the All-Star break I might lose my mind.

Anyways, tomorrow Home Run Derby ’08 begins.

     The Participants:
     – Lance Berkman
     – Ryan Braun

     – Josh Hamilton
     - Evan Longoria
     – Justin Morneau
     – Grady Sizemore
     – Dan Uggla
     – Chase Utley

* As expected, Big G decided he will not be participating after not making the All-Star team.*

I’ll be rooting for Hamilton. Who has your support in the HR Derby?

Other Notes:
- C.C. Sabathia hit a homer to tie the game for his team in Milwaukee today [his second home run this season] … someone is loving the National League. The picture up on MLB.com has to go though, makes him look like a balloon. Can his uniform get any baggier?
- Hell of a game in Texas today. The Yankee offense should have watched it… could’ve learned something. Ian Kinsler is unbelievable. 25 game hitting streak now. He’s got my vote for MVP for the 1st half.
